Travie McCoy Remembers Tupac Shakur's Death 14 Years Later

Monday (September 13) is the 14th anniversary of the death of Tupac Shakur. Pac died in 1996, after succumbing to gunshot wounds he suffered a week prior when leaving a Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas.

Travie McCoy still vividly remembers the day. He said he did not believe the news at first.

"I was still in high school," McCoy recalled at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday in Los Angeles. "I was a freshman. I got to school and kids were crying. Kids were upset. I was like, 'What's going on?' I hadn't heard the news. I thought somebody in the school had died. They was, 'Nah — Tupac didn't make it.' My jaw immediately dropped. My school took it upon themselves to play R.E.M.'s 'Everybody Hurts.' It was pandemonium. Everybody burst in tears, in pieces. It was a sad day. He was a fallen soldier to say the least."

Like so many others, McCoy loved Shakur's music but he also respected the rap legend as a person.

"I came up on Pac. I think I might have given [my cousin] Tyga his first Pac record," Travie said. "I just got tingles thinking about that day. Thinking about hearing one of the saddest songs played over the loudspeaker in school when he got killed. It's a shame. But his music lives on. I was listening to All Eyez on Me three days ago."

Meanwhile, veteran rapper-producer David Banner also recently commented about Pac's passing. In an MTV News interview Friday, Banner said, "It was bigger than the death of a rapper. It was the death of an icon for young people ... Pac was deeper than music."

Fourteen years ago today Tupac Amaru Shakur, one of the most influential MCs ever, died of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest at Las Vegas’ University Hospital after being shot four times in a drive by six days earlier. He was pronounced dead at 4:03 p.m.

A prolific MC and actor, Tupac sold over 75 Million records and starred in almost a dozen movies including Juice, Poetic Justice and Above The Rim. Despite rampant speculation, Shakur’s murder remains unsolved.

Even in death he remains one of the most controversial and debated hip-hop artists ever, but there is no denying the influence he’s had on the game to this very day.

Missy Elliott: “Aaliyah Would Still Be At The Top”

It’s hard to believe that nine years have gone by since Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash.

Her close friend and collaborator Missy Elliott recently answered some questions from MTV about the anniversary of Aaliyah’s death and her influence on today’s female R&B singers.

MTV: When you look around today at some of the current R&B stars, who do you see traces of Aaliyah’s influence in?

Missy Elliott: I think it’s hard for Aaliyah to be duplicated, because she had her own lane. But Ciara is an R&B singer who loves to dance, and Aaliyah was that same kinda artist. We knew when she dropped a record, we couldn’t wait for the video. I think Aaliyah has influenced artists like a Ciara.

MTV: How do you spend a day like this, where everyone is mourning the anniversary of your friend’s passing?

Elliott: I plan to spend my day the same as any other day, because there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of [Aaliyah] or watch a video or play her music. I miss her every day.

MTV: What memory do you revisit most when you think about Aaliyah?

Elliott: We’ve had so many memorable times. My most memorable is when me, her and Tim wore outfits alike! It was burgundy Pony outfits to the awards. Mind you, Aaliyah was petite so her Pony outfit looked so cute on her, but I kept looking at mine during the awards whispering to her saying, “I feel like a big-ass pony for real!” And we laughed and laughed! Too many memories to state them all! If she was still with us, she would still be at the top. Because she always stayed pushing herself to be better.
